A common point of confusion (and sometimes frustration) when getting blood work done is understanding what support a blood draw center can provide when a client is reviewing their results and seeking next step advisement.
It helps to separate this into two areas: bloodwork interpretation vs. diagnosis and treatment.
By law, blood draw centers must provide basic interpretation of lab results. This includes explaining what each test measures and identifying where results fall within standard reference ranges (e.g., normal, abnormal, or critical). There are also specific responsibilities of the draw center, such as follow-up procedures on critical values and required reporting for certain PIT tests, but overall, this is the narrow scope of practice blood testing centers are limited to.
Blood draw centers do not diagnose conditions nor can they provide treatment recommendations. While our medical staff are trained in specimen collection and lab processes, they are not primary care providers and cannot determine the underlying cause of abnormal results.
For example, if a result shows a low Free T3 level, it is natural to ask what that means or whether it indicates a thyroid condition. However, abnormal values can have many potential causes, and interpreting those results in a clinical context requires a licensed medical provider who can evaluate your full health history, symptoms, and recommend additional testing, if the providers feels such is warranted.
Blood work is a powerful tool for measuring and monitoring biomarkers, but on its own, it does not provide a complete diagnosis. For medical guidance, diagnosis, and treatment, results should always be reviewed with your primary care provider or a qualified healthcare professional.
An example of the lab results you will receive can be viewed HERE, demonstrating the level of detail and reporting we provide. In this sample, the client received a CMP panel and Hemoglobin A1C. Each report outlines all markers tested, includes reference ranges, and highlights any abnormal values for ease of interpretation.
