PROVIDER INITIATED TEST - The Sickle Cell Screen, also known as the hemoglobin solubility test, is a blood screening test used to detect the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS), the abnormal hemoglobin associated with sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease.
This test is commonly used for newborn screening, pre-employment or athletic screening, prenatal evaluation, or assessment in individuals with a family history of sickle cell disease. A positive screening result indicates the presence of hemoglobin S but does not distinguish between sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease. Confirmatory testing, such as hemoglobin electrophoresis, is typically required for diagnosis.
